About the company

We are an independent, family-owned business based in Hertfordshire. Our ethos is to create products that are kind to us and our environment. We keep our ingredients simple, with many eco-friendly, organic and all cruelty-free.

After visiting Hitchin Lavender Farm in Hertfordshire back in 2017, we wanted to do something with all of the beautiful lavender we had picked. This was the catalyst that started our passion for soap making and the beginning of the journey of Castaway Cottage for me. We love Enid Blyton’s Famous Five books and our name, Castaway Cottage, was inspired by the book I was reading at the time, as it sounded like a location that would pop up in one of their intrepid adventures.

After two years of making Christmas presents with my family and generating a growing demand for our products, fast-forward to 2019 where, with the help of friends and family, Castaway is now a Limited Company and a growing enterprise involving three generations of my family.

100% HANDMADE

Each and every product is handcrafted, handmade or hand-poured by us. We know what goes into everything that we make. Our bath bombs are tested and approved for use, our candles have all of the appropriate paperwork required by law In the process of making the products, we’ve discovered a lot about the ingredients and after a lot of research has discovered some of the potential ingredients were not as friendly as we’d like.

Wherever possible we source ethical ingredients or ingredients which include ethically sourced materials. We’re a pretty sensitive lot – so we look for ingredients that are kinder to the skin as well as the environment.

A percentage from our bespoke boxes profit, goes to ADD-vance, a charity supporting other families in Hertfordshire with Autism.
